Patients should be seated for 10 minutes prior to blood being taken. EDTA blood should be kept on ice until separation (within 1 hr. of phlebotomy) Plasma should be frozen immediately and remain frozen until analysis. Special requirements Ideally the patient should avoid caffeine and nicotine for 24 hours prior to blood sampling. If 3-Methoxytyramine is required, it is suggested that blood be taken following an overnight fast. Please send samples with the completed Blood Science form, which can be found under Hospital Forms on the intranet. Please include the position the patient was in whilst blood was being taken (ie Supine or Erect). This will aid in clinical interpretation of results. Plasma Metanephrines are analysed by mass Spec in the Mater Hospital |
