Serum Androstenedione

Androstenedione is secreted predominately by the adrenal gland and production is at least partly controlled by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). It is also produced independent of ACTH in the testes and ovaries from adrenal-secreted dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S). 

Clinical Utility of Serum Androstenedione analysis includes

  • Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hyperandrogenism e.g. PCOS and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) etc.
  • It can be useful in the monitoring CAH treatment, in conjunction with other steroids
  • In paediatric practice it may be measured in the diagnostic work-up of premature adrenarche
