Surgical resection specimens should be submitted intact ‑ they should not be incised and dissected in the operating theatre, as this prevents their proper gross examination by the pathologist, and may interfere with taking appropriate tissue sections from tumour resection margins. Specimens are ordinarily submitted to the laboratory in an adequately sized container covered with at least its own volume of 10% buffered formalin. |
