Notes |
Useful for:
- Monitoring monoclonal gammopathies.
Clinical Information:
- Serum proteins may be divided into six fractions using electrophoresis; the albumin, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta-1, beta-2 and gamma regions.
- The concentration of the regions and pattern of the electrophoreis can be charateristic of monoclonal gammopathies. These gammopathies include Multiple Myeloma, Primary Systemic Amyloidosis, and Light Chain Deposition disease.
- Patients with Multiple Myeloma can often have a monoclonal band in their urine. These bands can be composed of immunoglobulin heavy chains and/or immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones Protein (BJP)).
- Electrophoresis of the urine is used to quantify the amount of immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones Protein (BJP)) being excreted in the urine.
Please Note:
- Electrophoresis of the urine is used to quantify the amount of immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones Protein (BJP)) being excreted in the urine. For detection of Bence Jones Protein (BJP) an Early Morning Urine (EMU) sample is recommended.
- It is recommended that an early morning urine sample be sent for analysis on all new Multiple Myeloma patients.
- Immunofixation is used to detect the presence of monoclonal heavy chains and/or light chains in the urine.
- If monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones Protein (BJP)) are detected by immunofixation, electrophoresis of the urine will be performed. This is requested by the laboratory.
- Urine samples that have monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains (Bence Jones Protein (BJP)) detectable on electrophoreis will have the level of monoclonal protein quantified. This is requested by the laboratory.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery samples must be stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
