Notes |
Useful for:
- Establishing a prognosis in Multiple Myeloma.
- Assesssing renal tubular disorders.
Clinical Information:
- Beta-2-Microglobulin is a small protein present on the surface of all nucleated cells.
- As Beta-2-Microglobulin is small, it can pass easily through the glomerular membrane in the kidney.
- High serum levels of Beta-2-Microglobulin are associated with increased cell turnover.
- In Multiple Myeloma higher levels of Beta-2-Microglobulin indicate a worse prognosis.
- In renal tubular disease serum Beta-2-Microglobulin are lower.
Please Note:
- Levels of Beta-2-Microglobulin can also be raised in benign conditions such as infection, inflammation or liver disease.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
