Notes |
Useful for:
- Assessing mast cell activation as a result of anaphylaxis.
- Investigating patients for Systemic Mastocytosis or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome.
Clinical Information:
- Tryptase, a protease protein, is a component of the secretory granules of mast cells.
- Activation of mast cells results in degranulation and the release of the mature tryptase protein.
- Anaphylaxisis results in mast cell activation and degranulation.
- Serum tryptase levels should be elevated 1 hour post reaction.
- A further increase should be detecable 3-6 hours post reaction.
- Levels should return to a baseline level 24 hours post reaction.
Please Note:
- Samples for Tryptase should be taken 1 hour, 3-6 hours and 24 hours post reaction.
- Postmortem samples should be taken within 48 hours from time of death.
- To maintain stability, samples for Tryptase must be sent immediately to the Immunology laboratory and the samples must be frozen upon receipt in SJH.
Where External Institutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and frozen at -20C. Samples can then be transported, frozen on dry ice, to St. James's Hospital for processing
