Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating patients suspected of having Antiphospholipid Syndrome.
Clinical Information:
- Cardiolipin is a phospholipid.
- Phospholipids play roles in several important cellular functions such as molecular signalling.
- Cardiolipin complexes extracellulaly with phospholipids, such as Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1, in vivo.
- Healthy individuals can have low levels of antibodies against these complexes of Cardiolipin and Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1.
- Higher concentrations of antibodies against these complexes of Cardiolipin and Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 occur in patients with Antiphospholipid Syndrome.
- A diagnosis of Antiphospholipid Syndrome requires that one clinical criteria and one laboratory criteria be met.
- The clinical criteria include vascular thromboses and recurrent miscarriages.
- The laboratory criteria require the demonstration of positive lupus anticoagulant antibodies and/or cardiolipin antibodies (IgG or IgM) and/or Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 antibdies (IgG or IgM). These positive tests must be demonstrated on at least 2 occasions, separated by a peroid of 12 weeks.
Please Note:
- The Cardiolipin antibody assay performed in this laboratory is for the IgG antibody isotype.
- All requests for Cardiolipin antibodies also have a Beta-2 Glycoprotein 1 antibody (IgG) assay performed.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
