Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating renal disease.
Clinical Information:
- The kidneys filter the blood to produce urine and are thus involved in several regulatory roles such as homeostasis and excretion.
- Abnormalities dectected in the urine can be associated with either renal disease or extra-renal disease.
- Microscopic investigation of urine can give detailed information on the presence of cells and/or other material, such as casts or crystals, in the urine.
- The content of casts defines their type. Some casts can be found in healthy individuals while others are diagnostic of renal disease.
- The presence of red cell casts is almost always indicitave of glomerulonephritis, while the presence of white cell and granular casts is less specific - these can be found in patients with various kidney infections.
Please Note:
- The presence of red cell casts is reported.
- Urine samples are concentrated prior to testing, therefore samples with less than 10mls of urine will not be tested.
- As casts degrade, urine samples that are older than 24 hours will not be tested.
- The cut-off time for receipt of samples for Urinary Casts is 15.00 on Fridays.
