Notes	Useful for: Investigating patients with renal failure or pulmonary hemorrhage associated with Goodpasture Syndrome. Clinical Information: Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM) antibodies cause glomerulonephritis, characterised by rapid onset renal failure and/or pulmonary hemorrhage. Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM) antibodies are associated with the non-collagenous carboxyl extension of Type IV procollagen. Goodpasture Syndrome usually occurs in males between the ages of 20 to 40 and over 50. Glomerulonephritis without pulmonary involvement due to Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM) antibodies is most common in women who are over 50. Please Note: This test is also available on an urgent basis by arrangement with the laboratory. For urgent tests the turnaround time is approximately three hours from specimen receipt. The cut-off time for sample receipt is 15.00 on Fridays. Where External Institutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4^oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing. All new positive GBM results will be confirmed using an alternative method.
