Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating patients for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.
- Differentiating Autoimmune Thyroid Disease from Non-Autoimmune Thyroid Disease or Hypothyroidism.
Clinical Information:
- Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme that is involved in synthesizing the thyroid hormones.
- Antibodies to Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) are frequently found in patients with Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases such as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Graves' Disease and Idiopathic Myxoedema.
- The highest Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibody levels are found in patients with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (up to 90%). Additionally, 60 - 80% of patients with Graves' disease can have Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies.
- The presence of Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism increases the risk of developing overt clinical hypothyroidism.
Please Note:
- As all the other tests for investigating patients for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease are performed in Biochemistry, a separate sample for Immunology is required for Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies.
- Where External Institutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
