Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating patients for humoral or combined immunodeficiency.
Clinical Information:
- Immunoglobulin G (IgG) represents about 80% of normal serum immunoglobulin.
- Approximately 65% of total IgG is IgG1, 25% is IgG2, 6% is IgG3 and 4% is IgG4.
- The subclass of IgG is determined by differences in the gamma heavy chain.
- IgG1 subclass deficiency usually occurs in conjunction with a deficiency in the other subclasses. This results in a severe immunoglobulin deficiency.
- IgG2 subclass deficiency can occur in isolation or in combination with:
Another IgG subclass deficiency,
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency.
- Isolated IgG3 and IgG4 deficiencies are rare.
Please Note:
- As IgG4 deficiency is rare and is best used to investigate IgG4-related disease, IgG4 levels are not included in the IgG subclass request.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
