Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating immunodeficiencies due to an inability to raise a specific antibody response.
Clinical Information:
- Pneumococcal vaccines are 23 valet vaccines isolated from Streptococcus Pneumoniae and represent 80% of the commonly encountered virulent serotypes.
- Immunistion with this vaccine is recommended in the elderly and in children at risk of severe life-threatening pneumococcal infection.
- This assay is a quantitative enzyme immunoassay used to determine a patient's ability to respond to specific polysaccharide antigens by measureing Total IgG antibody levels to Pneumococcal Capsular Polysaccharide (PCP) in patients pre- and post-vaccination.
- Patients with repeated bacterial infections should be investiged to determine their ability to respond to specific polysaccharide antigens.
Please Note:
- The Pneumococcal IgG2 assay will be discontinued from 01.11.2022
- As this assay measures a patient's ability to respond to specific polysaccharide antigens via a thymus-independant response, all samples for Specific Response to Pneumococcal Capsular Polysaccharide (PCP) (Total IgG) also have Specific Response to Tetanus (IgG) (thymus-dependant response) performed.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
