Notes |
Useful for:
- To diffrentiate between Alzheimer's Disease and other non-Alzheimer's Disease types of dementia.
Clinical Information:
- Alzheimer's Disease is a slow progressive disease that probably starts 20-30 years before any clinical symptoms.
- Alzheimer's Disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterised by intracellular neurofibrillary tangles and extracellular amyloid plaques in the cortical and limbic regions of the brain.
- The neurofibrillary tangles and extracellular amyloid plaques mainly affect the cholinergic system which is important for cognitive functions such as memory.
- In Alzheimer's Disease the neurofibrillary tangles are mainly composed of hyperphosphorylated Tau protein, and the amyloid plaques of an Aß amyloid peptide. These biomarkers form part of the diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's Disease
- The CSF Neurodegeneration Biomarker Assay consists of 3 assays which measure the levels of ß-amyoid, phosphorylated Tau protein and total Tau protein in CSF.
- The combined levels of these three proteins allows in the diffrentiation between Alzheimer's Disease and other neurological diseases.
Please Note:
- The CSF Neurodegeneration Biomarker Assay requires specialised sterile polypropylene collection tubes. Incorrect handling of the collection tubes may result in false results.
- The CSF sample must be received in the laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged at 3300rpm for 10 minutes at room temperature within 2 hours of collection. The supernatant should then be aspirated, using polypropylene pipette tips, and transferred as four 0.5ml aliquots into clean polypropylene tubes. Samples can then be stored upright and frozen at -80°C for up to 2 years or transported, frozen on dry ice, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
- Samples must be received in the Immunology Laboratory before 4pm Monday to Friday.
