Useful for:
- Evaluating patients with systemic infection.
- Evaluating patients with suspected localised infection (prosthetic joint infection (PJI)).
- Evaluating patients with chronic inflammatory conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Systemic Lupus
- Erythematosis (SLE) or Alkyloising Spondilitis.
Clinical Information:
- Interleukin 6 (IL-6) plays a role in both the innate and adapative immune responses.
- IL-6 drives the acute inflammatory response associated with innate immunity. This results in fever and the induction of expression of C-reactive Protein (CRP), Serum Amyloid A (SAA) and fibrinogen in the liver.
- As part of the adaptive immune response IL-6 is involved in activating the proliferation and diffrentiation of antibody producing B-cells.
- Dyregulation of IL-6 can contribute to chronic inflammatory disease. In particular, as IL-6 is involoved in bone resorption, it plays a mojor role in inflammatory joint destruction in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Please Note:
- Samples for IL-6 must be received in the laboratory as soon as possible post collection.
