Notes |
Useful for:
- Investigating patients suspected of having Autoimmune Hepatitis.
Clinical Information:
- Autoimmune liver diseases are characterised by the presence of highly specific antibodies against nuclear, mitochondrial, microsomal, and cytoplasmic antigens.
- Liver/Kidney Microsome (LKM) Antibodies are a serologic marker for Type-2 Autoimmune Hepatitis - a subtype of Autoimmune Hepatitis.
- Liver/Kidney Microsome (LKM) Antibodies are generally directed against the enzyme Cytochrome Monooxygenase P450.
- Patients with Type-2 Autoimmune Hepatitis tend to be young females with a severe disease that responds well to immunosupressive therapy.
Please Note:
- Some patients with Hepatitis C infections can also have Liver/Kidney Microsome (LKM) Antibodies.
- All samples that are positive for Liver/Kidney Microsome (LKM) Antibodies are titred at 1:40, 1:80 and 1:160. This is requested by the laboratory.
- Samples with unusual staining in the liver will have an immunoblot performed. This is requested by the laboratory.
- The liver immunoblot includes the antigens AMA-M2, M2-3E (BPO), Sp100, PML, gp210, LKM-1, LC-1, SLA/LP and Ro-52.
- As the substrate (Nova Lite Rat, Liver, Kidney, Stomach Substrate Slides) in this assay is also used for the detection of Smooth Muscle Antibodies, Parietal Cell Antibodies and Mitochondrial Antibodies, all requests for Liver/Kidney Microsome (LKM) Antibodies also have Smooth Muscle Antibodies, Parietal Cell Antibodies and Mitochondrial Antibodies requested.
- Where External Institiutions cannot guarantee immediate delivery, samples must be centrifuged, separated and stored at 4oC. Samples can then be transported, as soon as possible, to St. James's Hospital for processing.
