Notes |
Please provide clinical details. Requests for ASOT testing are not processed without relevant clinical details. Detection of Anti - Streptolysin O ( ASO) in human serum may aid in the diagnosis of streptococcal infections. In these infections promoted by acute streptococcal infections, anti streptolysin O antibodies are produced due to the presence of the streptolysin O antigen liberated by the bacteria. Information on the extent and degree of infection can be obtained from the measurement of serum ASO levels. Increased ASO levels are also associated with rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis
Send sample to the laboratory without delay. Sample should be refrigerated if not transported immediately.
Samples are referred to Eurofins Biomnis for processing.

Reference range |
Low levels of antibody tend to persist in the serum of healthy individuals and the generally accepted upper limit of normal is 200 IU/ml. However, ASO levels rise rapidly following reinfection and the demonstration of rapidly increasing antibody titres is of diagnostic significance. 200 IU/ml is regarded internationally as the upper limit of the normal range but values may vary with age, sex and geographical location.Elevated levels of ASO titres have also been found in healthy carriers. |
