This test is not performed in St James's Microbiology. Samples are referred to Biomnis Laboratory for testing. Specimens must be transported as rapidly as possible to Microbiology as the organism is only viable for 48 hours in the PORT-PYL transport media. Samples should be received in Microbiology Laboratory no later that 11:30am on Monday to Thursday ONLY. To ensure the viability of the organism the transport medium should be allowed to reach room temperature before use. Cloudy or out of date transport medium should not be used. Biopsies are brought to the laboratory by the hospital portering system. Biopsies should not be transported by the pneumatic tube system. Sample should be kept at 20-25°C away from light if not transported immediately |
