Notes |
Urgent specimens may be processed as soon as possible. Please contact Microbiology medical staff if required. Both Legionella and S pneumonia assays performed simultaneously so please order as a pair. The ImmuView® Streptococcus pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila Urinary Antigen kit uses lateral flow immunochromatographic methodology to detect Legionella in patients with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 infections. It will not detect infections caused by other serogroups (only serogroup 1). Excretion of Legionella antigen in urine may vary depending on the individual patient and their underlying illness or treatment. individuals have been shown to excrete antigen for an extended period of time (60 days) so that a history of a recent respiratory illness compatible with Legionaires disease must be sought. Early treatment with appropriate antibiotics may also decrease antigen excretion in some individuals.Testing diuretic urine may affect the ability of the test to detect antigen. Please note results from patients who have been S pneumoniae vaccinated in the preceeding 6 days may give false positive results ImmuView® S. pneumoniae and L. pneumophila Urinary Antigen Test has not been validated to use with urine samples from children under 8 years. Note: A negative test result does not rule out the possibility of Legionella infection due to other serogroups or species of Legionella Administration of antibiotics might influence the results for S. pneumonia False positive S pneumonia results may result from urines with a pH>9.
High levels of water based lubricants may result in false positive or indeterminant L pneumophilia results.
