Notes

Samples are sent to the Microbiology laboratory in St. James’s Hospital and are then referred to Dublin Brain Bank, Dept. of Neuropathology, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9.

*NB  Please send a minimum volume of 5mL (A minimum volume of 2mL is required if exclusively testing for 14-3-3 Protein).

CSF 14-3-3 sampling instructions

  1. Please call ahead to the Microbiology laboratory 2972 or 2966 or 2985 and inform them of the pending specimen
  2. Complete clinical questionnaire for samples sent to Beaumont for 14-3-3; include in double bag                                                          CJD Questionaire and Information
  3. Lab tests ordered online on EPR
  4. Wear PPE – include gown, gloves and mask with CSF procedure
  5. Treat all CSFs for 14-3-3 protein as potentially infectious
  6. Volume: total 5ml
  7. Sample should be clear and colourless (blood increases false positives)
  8. Sample should have a low white cell count   (>20 are unsuitable as patients with CJD rarely have increased number of CSF white cells; this increases likelihood of a false positive)
  9. Avoid contaminating outside the small sterile lab sampling containers
  10. Write - TSE precautions on label
  11. Label with patient name, date of birth, MRN , date and time of sampling
  12. Bag specimen then place specimen with forms/ questionnaire in another bag (double bag)
  13. Hand carry samples to the SJH lab to specimen reception
  14. Do not use the chute

**All waste for incineration in the overspill containers with black lid or purple top cytotoxic bins label as ‘TSE infectious waste’

    1. high or moderate infectivity tissue types
      • dispose of all patient risk items in contact with high or medium risk tissues using a rigid yellow leak proof fluid waste container sealed with a black lid or
      • use Cytotoxic sharps box purple top– (ie. Lumbar puncture)
    1. Low risk tissue - body fluids such as blood, urine, faeces from patients with TSE should be handled and disposed of as per hospital waste policy
