Specimens sent to the National Virus Reference Laboratory User Manual, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4 A two-stage approach for the serological diagnosis of B burgdorferi infection is currently applied by the NVRL. 1. A sensitive enzyme immunoassay is used as a screening step. 2. Samples yielding reactive screening test results are referred to the Lyme Borreliosis Unit (Lyme RU) Public Health England (PHE) Porton for further investigation by second-stage immunoblot (Western blot) tests. Send sample to the laboratory without delay. Sample should be refrigerated if not transported immediately. |
