Dengue fever is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, most commonly Aedes aegypti. A recent history of foreign travel to an endemic area is therefore important to include on the request form or OCM. This test should be ordered by a Consultant clinician or Infectious Disease physician. Specimens for Dengue PCR are sent to the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), HPA Microbiology Services, Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP4 0JG.
