Dengue fever is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, most commonly Aedes aegypti. A recent history of foreign travel to an endemic area is therefore important to include on the request form or OCM. This test should be ordered by a Consultant clinician or Infectious Disease physician.

Minimum epidemiological and clinical information (major criteria) required in this laboratory for Dengue Virus (DENV) testing includes:

• Endemic area (to which the patient travelled in the last month)
• Date of patient return from endemic area
• Date of onset illness
• Previous laboratory-confirmed history of DENV infection

Other information (minor criteria) which would be useful includes:

• Haematology results - FBC, differential white cell count and platelet count
• Clinical presentation

Dengue PCR is also available following consultation with Microbiology medical staff. Specimens for Dengue PCR are sent to the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), HPA Microbiology Services, Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP4 0JG.

Send sample to the laboratory without delay. Sample should be refrigerated if not transported immediately
