Notes |
Urgent specimens may be processed out of hours. Please contact the laboratory. Two types of human immunodeficiency viruses, collectively designated HIV, cause acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) is similar to HIV-1 in its structural morphology, genomic organisation, and cell tropism in vitro cytopathogenicity, transmission routes and ability to cause AIDS. However HIV-2 is less pathogenic than HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections have a longer latency period with slower progression to disease, lower viral titres and lower rates of vertical and horizontal transmission. As a screening assay, this laboratory uses the Abbott Alinity HIV Ag/Ab combo assay, a two-step immunoassay, to determine the presence of HIV p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 (group M and O) and HIV-2 in human serum and plasma using Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (CMIA) technology. Reactive samples are confirmed using the bioMérieux® VIDAS HIV DUO Ultra . This HIV assay is an automated test based on the combined detection of HIV-1 p24 antigen and anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2 total immunoglobulins using Enzyme Linked Fluorescence (ELFA) technology. Serotyping (HIV-1 vs. HIV-2), if required, is performed using the Bio-Rad Geenius™ HIV 1/2 Confirmatory Assay. Send sample to the laboratory without delay. Sample should be refrigerated if not transported immediately. |
