If sending a Dryswab (fine tip peel pouch) in viral transport meduim , swab base of the lesion, break swab into the bottle and recap. Patients with suspected gingivostomatitis or herpangina should be asked to rinse mouth with saline. Washings should be collected in a sterile universal container and sent to microbiology laboratory. Send sample to the laboratory without delay. Sample should be refrigerated if not transported immediately HSV antiviral resistance testing can be ordered following consultation with Dr. Brendan Crowley, Consultant Virologist on (01) 4162968 |
