Notes |
CSF Specimens must be sent to the laboratory without delay Viral testing on CSF samples is performed in the microbiology department on the Biofire system FilmArray analysis is carried out on request onsite in the Microbiology lab in SJH with a TAT of <2hours.
The FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) Panel is a qualitative multiplexed nucleic acid-based in vitro diagnostic test.
The FilmArray ME Panel is capable of simultaneous detection and identification of multiple bacterial, viral, and yeast nucleic acids directly from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens obtained via lumbar puncture from individuals with signs and/or symptoms of meningitis and/or encephalitis.
The following organisms are identified using the FilmArray ME Panel:
If viral investigations are not covered by the Biofire ME panel (e.g. Epstein Barr virus, JC virus) the requesting team must fill out a General Microbiology Request form with specific Virology request and send to Microbiology lab - these tests will be performed in the NVRL with a TAT of up to 3 days.
