Aspirin is hydrolyzed in the liver to form the active metabolite salicylate. Serum salicylate quantitation is useful to assess for possible toxic levels of salicylate, as may occur in aspirin overdose. This test can also be used to monitor salicylate levels in high dose aspirin therapy. |
