ACTH is synthesised in the anterior pituitary, in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), and stimulates adrenal cortisol and androgen production. Serum ACTH measurement is useful in the investigation and monitoring of conditions associated with excessive or deficient cortisol e.g. Cushing’s syndrome, adrenal insufficiency, adrenal tumours and hypopituitarism. |
