AST is an intracellular enzyme present in both cytoplasm and mitochondria, found throughout the body, with the greatest amounts in liver, skeletal and cardiac muscle, and the kidneys. It is predominantly used in the investigation of suspected liver disease. In the past it was measured as part of a “cardiac enzyme” profile but this has been superseded by use of Troponin T or I. |
