Notes |
NB: Do not refrigerate samples. Whole blood samples stored at room temperature can be analysed for up to 4 days. Plasma samples separated after centrifugation (3000rpm for 10 minutes) within 4 days of collection can be analysed for up to 7 days. Purpose of Test: Plasma Viscometry (PV) is the measurement of the consistency or thickness of plasma, the fluid which carries blood cells and proteins throughout the blood system. Plasma viscosity changes when there is an increase in proteins or immunoglobulins in the plasma, due to infection, disease or malignancy. Conditions which exhibit a high plasma viscosity level include hyperviscosity syndromes, multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinaemia and Monoclonal Gammopathy of Unspecified Source.
